08.02.17 U19: Late Schembri strike gives Swieqi United all points!
In a must-win fixture against a very polished Mqabba side, Swieqi United had to rely on team cohesion and a priceless strike by on-form Nicky Schembri to bag an important three points for the Orange.
The significance of this result will perhaps be better judged at the end of the season but there is no doubting the fact that at this moment in time, this Minors team certainly has character and mental toughness.
Buoyed by their recent exploits in the Youth KO, Swieqi United were under no false illusions as they took the field to face a strong Mqabba side, who were joint level on points with the Orange prior to kick-off.
In a very balanced encounter, both sides went close on several occasions. However, Swieqi always seemed to have the better of the chances throughout the match. The Young Owls hit the crossbar on three occasions throughout the evening [twice through Sadat Suraka and once through Nicky Schembri] and went agonizingly close on two separate occasions thanks to Mark Martin.
Deep into injury time and with the game heading towards a 0-0 draw, Martin Grech's amazing run down the flank resulted in a deep low cross into the box. Nicky Schembri trapped the ball and unleashed a fierce shot past the hapless Mqabba keeper - finally opening the scoring and subsequently sending the Swieqi bench into raptures. The result stayed that way and despite a late scare, the Orange held on to claim a massive win.
