Swieqi Futsal secure top 6 status

15.02.16 Swieqi Futsal secure top 6 status

Swieqi faced the challenge of Sliema Wanderers on Friday night at Corradino in a match which Swieqi knew that if they secured a point it would secure their position in the top half of the table and be part of Malta's elite teams.

Despite having a depleted squad, Swieqi went on the search for a win. however the Sliema goalkeeper definitely frustrated Swieqi since he pulled off a number of chances.
The opening 15 minutes saw Swieqi have plenty of chances to score and even Sliema had their fair share of chances too. James Attard was Swieqi's goalkeeper and he performed a number of outstanding saves to keep his team well into the game.
The last five minutes of the game were a joy to match. First Sliema hit the post, then Swieqi surged into attack only to see Omar's chance go just wide. Then with 2 minutes to go Fredrick Johnson grabbed two quick successive goals to put Swieqi 2-0 up. Swieqi thought they secured a lead for half time, however Sliema had other plans and grabbed two goals in the last minute and a half Cianco tried to head Swieqi into the lead with just seconds left, however the Sliema goalkeeper ensured the score was 2-2 at the end of the first half.
Swieqi came out fighting in the second half and quickly re-took the lead thanks to an own goal. James continued to perform magnificent saves to deny Sliema. On the 7th minute Bobo hit the post, with Sliema hitting it two times after! Swieqi then raced to Sliema's goal only for Wizu's shot to be well saved. Sliema then surged into counter attack and hit the cross bar! James then perfectly saved the rebound and Bobo saw his effort hit the post!
On the 16tth minute Fred grabbed his personal hat-trick putting Swieqi 4-2 ahead. Sliema pegged a goal back seconds later, leading to a edgy final at the end. Sliema managed to bring the scoreline 4-4 on the 20th minute through a free kick. Swieqi tried to find the winning goal but as the last seconds ticked away both teams had to settle for a point, enough to take Swieqi through to the elite round.
It must be said that it was also pleasant to see Andre Cianco and Jamie Mangion back in action for the club, with the latter having an outstanding game and defending bravely!
Next up Swieqi face Lija on Thursday 18th February at 9.30pm at Corradino in the last game from the present league.
