Swieqi exit Trophy after entertaining encounter

16.12.15 Swieqi exit Trophy after entertaining encounter

After 15 straight consecutive league defeats, St. Andrew's gained their first win after defeating Swieqi United in the derby. In an entertaining encounter, both sides played very good football but it was St. Andrew's superior quality and pace which made the difference.

St. Andrew's intentions were made clear when after 15 minutes, Kyrian Nwoko's flying header made it 1-0 after some good work down the wing by Joseph Farrugia. Two minutes later, St. Andrew's made it 2-0 when Luke Pace did not handle the ball from a corner and Eloy Nkene lobbed the ball past the hapless keeper.

Swieqi however did not give up. After an earlier header by Matthew Asciak was thwarted, the Orange reduced the deficit thanks to Bruno Menezes.

Just before half time, St. Andrew's made it 3-1 when Matthew Guillaumier pounced from close range to ensure the Saints went into the break leading comfortably.

After the break, Swieqi made a few changes with Jean Noel Azzopardi and Kenneth Ekezie coming on for Calleja Cremona and Jean Claude Borg. Guillaumier then made it 4-1 with a beautiful strike from outside the box before Swieqi went agonisingly close through Jon Briscoe White.

Three minutes from the end, Swieqi made it 2-4 when Kristian Sultana's header hit the crossbar but went in off him to ensure the game finished on a high for the Orange.

Formation: L. Pace, M. Asciak, D. Mifsud, J. Briscoe White, K. Sultana, G. Refalo, J.C. Borg (Ekezie), P. Briscoe White, B. Menezes (T. P. Debono), D. Calleja Cremona (J. Azzopardi), M. Caribotti.
