Swieqi fight back to earn merited point

14.12.15 Swieqi fight back to earn merited point

Swieqi United took on Qrendi at Mosta Stadium on Saturday hoping to stop a run of three straight losses. With goalkeeper Sam Bartolo out, Luke Pace defended the post and Jon Briscoe White was also ruled out through injury.
Qrendi were by far the better team during the first half and they made their presence felt throughout the initial proceedings. Swieqi did try to penetrate the Qrendi rearguard but were finding their runs continuously checked by the Southerners. Qrendi went into the lead 3 minutes before half time when their striker, who was unmarked from a free kick neatly headed the ball easily into the net. Right on half time, Swieqi conceded an indirect free kick inside the box but quick thinking enabled the orange to clear the ball away.
In the second half, Swieqi came out willing to at least earn a point. With Jean claude Borg replacing Robert Southward, Swieqi began to dominate proceedings. They did go very close to Kristian Sultana and Kenneth Ekezie but it was Kane Micallef who managed to equalise. A good run by Jean Noel Azzopardi on the right was followed by an inch perfect cross which found Micallef whose control enabled him to lash the ball past the hapless Qrendi keeper.
Swieqi continued to attack and Matteo Caribotti added a different dimension to the strikeforce. Qrendi did threaten Swieqi through a free kick but the shot ended up being way off target. In the end, a point was a fair result.
