On the 22nd of August 2015, Swieqi United F.C. held its Annual Business Breakfast at the Cavalieri Art Hotel. Several well-known personalities attended the event including MFA President Mr. Norman Darmanin Demajo, MP Mrs Kristy Debono, MP Dr Marthese Portelli, Swieqi Mayor Mr. Noel Muscat, the Technical Director of Women’s Football Mr.Pierre Brincat, among others. The event brought together members of the Press, Sponsors and SUFC Committee, Coaches and Players.

Dr Justin Fenech, President of Swieqi United F.C., together with Vice Presidents Dr.Michael Calleja and, Dr. Robert Dingli and Technical Director Billy Mock, gave a brief introduction on all the six competing squads.

Dr Justin Fenech, President of Swieqi United F.C., opened the event and explained that when Swieqi United F.C. was created back in 2009 the founding members aimed at creating a sustainable and modern football club with a professional corporate image. 6 years down the line, the Club had achieved a number of successes on and off the pitch and was now embarking on a five year plan with the aim of strengthening the club’s foundation in order that it may stand the test of time. The Club, he opined, was on the right track, having grown into an organisation that boasts 6 competing teams, a budding academy, the youngest Executive Committee in Maltese football which was 17 people strong, 20 technical staff members and over 240 active registered players. The Club was working on fostering a sport community which included other sport and this thanks to its affiliation with Swieqi Overseas Rugby Union FC and Swieqi Phoenix Handball Club, among others.

Dr.Michael Calleja, Vice-President for Technical Affairs, was pleased with the addition of Billy Mock as Technical Director and Seniors Head Coach and stated that the Club is now better structured, more disciplined and more organised than it ever was before. Furthermore, Dr. Calleja stated that players who join Swieqi United must join not only to play and win but also to embark on Swieqi United F.C’s. five year plan.

Dr. Robert Dingli, Vice-President for Administrative Affairs added that Swieqi United F.C. was indeed a unique club that worked hard for its professional image on and off the pitch.

Technical Director Billy Mock gave a brief overview of the strategy the Club was adopting – primarily that of developing and involving young players as well as build a sound coaching staff at all levels.

The Club proceeded to launch its club structure and all Squad Head Coaches were given the opportunity to present their technical team as well as their objectives. What was important to note was that each squad had a technical staff allocation of a minimum of 4 coaches and 1 physio. 

The Club is fielding 6 competitive squads, namely:

  • Seniors Squad – MFA 2nd Division
  • Futsal Squad – FMA Premier Division
  • Women Squad – MFA Women’s League Section B
  • U19 – MFA Youth League Section D
  • U17 and U13 – Youth FA Leagues

The Club Sponsors for 2015/16 season are:; MT.R Contracting Ltd,; Bit 8; Noel Muscat & Co; Da Vinci Hospital; Logix Creative; Untangled Media; Cavalieri Art Hotel and Sportika. Other new sponsors would be announced in the coming days.

MFA President Mr.Darmanin Demajo stated that he wished that there were more clubs with the vision, management and positive attitude showcased by Swieqi United F.C. He augured the club great success and thanked the Executive Committee for its involvement and support to the MFA. Dr Justin Fenech, thanked the MFA President for these kind words and for his work in modernising Maltese football, in particular for the advances made in removing parameters for amateur players. The Club had always been against such parameters and will continue to support the MFA on this matter.

Mr Pierre Brincat predicted a bright future for Swieqi United’s Women squad and explained how he was surprised by the organisation and dedication shown by the Club as a whole. He pledged his support and help to the Club’s plan to field U16 and U12 female squads within the next 5 years. 

Swieqi Mayor Mr.Noel Muscat closed the event by saying that he was honoured with the achievements that the Club had made since its inception. Mr.Muscat added that it is vital for the locality of Swieqi to promote sport as part of living a healthy lifestyle. He ended by wishing the Club all the best in the upcoming season.
