15.04.15 Swieqi ladies keep on impressing
After more than a month without any competitive games, the Women's league resumed last night when Swieqi took on Tarxien Rainbows at Luxol Stadium.
This was a match which both teams knew they had to win in order to remain with a chance to win Section B. Tarxien started strongly and capitilised on some uncertainty which was being shown by the ladies in Orange. However Swieqi's back line, together with the strong presence of keeper Raisa Rosignaud kept Tarxien at bay and Swieqi soon started to settle into the match.
Backed by a sizeable crowd and under the watchful eye of Women's National Team Coach Mark Gatt, Swieqi surged into attack after attack, with a large chunk of the game being played out in Tarxien's own half. Tarxien had their goalkeeper to thank for keeping the score 0-0 after pulling off two magnificent saves from Becky Naudi and Amy Galea Gingell.
The formation that Swieqi adopted was impeccable, with Krista Montfort playing a lonely striker holding the ball waiting for Kristina and Amy to come down the wings. This caused all sorts of problems for Tarxien who couldn't cope with the pace being set by Swieqi.
From a corner, Kristina Agius's acrobatic kick hit the post. Swieqi were awarded a penalty close to the half hour mark when Tarxien handled the ball in the penalty area. Kate Galea stepped up but was unlucky to see her shot crash off the crossbar! Swieqi did not let this upset them and soon after Kristina Agius coolly put Swieqi ahead 1-0. Swieqi did try to grab a second goal before the break but the referee blew his whistle and Swieqi headed into the break 1-0 up.
The second half started off just like how the first half ended. Swieqi continued banging on Tarxien's door in search for that second goal. Tarxien tried to find an equalizer and went agonizing close however Rosignaud was quick to her feet and threw her body to clear the danger.
Swieqi doubled their score on the hour mark when Becky Naudi scored a wonder goal to give Swieqi another win and 3 precious points.
2 games remain in Swieqi's debut season. The team is currently top of the league with 22 points and next take on Sliema on Monday 27th April at 8.15pm at Zebbug Ground.
