Women's League - Swieqi keep marching on.

18.02.15 Women's League - Swieqi keep marching on.

This was a match between two teams fighting for the top spot in Section B. Both teams headed into this match having previously scored goals in their other respective matches.

Swieqi began the match positively and quickly settled down with some neat passing between them and playing as a collective team.

Swieqi broke the deadlock soon around the half hour mark when Becky Naudi dribbled her way through the Hamrun defence and slotted the ball home to give Swieqi a deserved 1-0 lead. Hamrun couldn't find the response to get themselves back into the match and soon after committed a foul which resulted in Swieqi's next goal.

Kate Galea stood up to take the free kick from a couple of yards out. A well taken shot found itself sailing into the net, hitting the underside of the crossbar in the process and sending both fans and players of Swieqi United into a round of raptures.

To be fair to Hamrun they did try and grab a goal before the half time break, however the Spartans found an in form Emma Grech between the sticks of Swieqi who managed to pull off an incredible save before the half time break.

A couple of minutes after the start of the second half Hamrun were dealt a blow when their keeper had to be taken off the pitch due to injury. With nobody to replace her, Hamrun player Daniela Farrugia stepped up to guard Hamrun's goalpost and thus automatically reduced themselves to 10 players.

Swieqi did try to take advantage of the extra player, however they seemed to have relaxed in the process and were focusing more on shooting from outside the box, leaving Daniela with little much to sweat on.

Swieqi had their keeper to thank for keeping a clean sheet who came out rushing to clear a dangerous ball and also kept out any threat of Hamrun grabbing a consilation goal.

With the temperature getting colder, the referee's final whistle was met with a round of applause from the Swieqi players and staff as well as those fans who braved the weather elements to come out and support the team.

This win ensured that Swieqi won all their 4 games from the first round of Section B and are currently in second place, two points behind leaders Hamun.

Swieqi next take on Lija/Iklin at 8.15pm at Zebbug Ground on Tuesday 24th February.
