10.02.15 Women's team bask in the sunshine
Swieqi's women's team made it 3/3 wins today when they faced a stern challenge against Sliema Wanderers at Zebbug Ground.
With the sun shining down onto the pitch and stands and backed by a sizeable crowd for both teams, the teams took to the pitch to begin the match. Both teams knew that if any team won it would mean that they would over take the other team in the table.
Swieqi began the match with some neat passing skills between themselves and as the minutes ticked by grow more confident in themselves. Some debatable decisions by the linesman prevented Swieqi from taking a deserved lead when he flagged Swieqi offside on more than one occasion.
Swieqi didn't let such a decision effect their morale and kept on surging into attack, however the Sliema defence and goalkeeper communicated well to keep Swieqi at bay, SUFC debut goalkeeper Krista Montfort was reduced to a spectator in the first half and enjoyed the sunshine.
Swieqi's coaches urged their players in the half time talk to up their tempo. The team talk proved to be a success, since barely 10 minutes after the restart Kristina Agius opened up the score 1-0. A powerful shot first hit the cross bar, then was blocked by the Sliema keeper and then cleared off the line by a Sliema defender, before Kristina ensured that the ball crossed the line.
Backed up by an ever supporting crowd, Swieqi went on the hunt for a second goal, limiting Sliema to defending in their own half and keeping Swieqi lurking around for another goal.
Becky Naudi was heading for goal when she was brought down in the box and the referee had no hesitation in pointing to the penalty spot. Kate Galea stepped up to take the penalty kick and duly converted it, leaving the Sliema keeper with no chance.
Sliema changed their playing style after conceding a second goal, becoming more aggressive in their play. Swieqi's defence however kept their composure and Montfort pulled of a spectacular save to deny Sliema from pulling a goal back.
Sliema's aggressive tactics soon backfired when they had a player dismissed for aggressive play. However Sliema didn't let this upset them and soon pulled a goal back 5 minutes from the end of normal time, sending both sets of players, club officials, coaches and supporters into a nervous period. However Swieqi's ladies showed how far they have progressed and kept their cool to see out a well deserved 2-1 victory, earning them their 3rd victory out of 3 games in Section B.
Swieqi next take on Hamrun on Tuesday 17th February at 8.15pm at Zebbug Ground.
