05.10.14 Swieqi sparkle in the pouring rain
Swieqi United 2 Zejtun Corinthians 0
(Kurt Pisani 5', Jeremy Gatt Coleiro 77')
In atrocious conditions, Swieqi United sqaured up to Zejtun Corinthians at the Luxol Stadium. With Matthew Sapiano injured, it was time for Matthew Mulholland (on loan from Msida) to make his division debut for Swieqi United. Swieqi instantly applied pressure from the onset as a a mix up from a corner resulted in Ekezie heading high for Kurt Pisani to head in from close range. 1-0 after 5 minutes and Swieqi were firmly in control. Zejtun did find the back of the net a few minutes later but the linesman duly flagged for offside. Just before half-time, Swieqi spurned an excellent opportunity to make it 2-0. Leontiev Konda's quick run down the right led to an incisive pass which Ekezie could not convert. Zejtun came out all guns blazing in the second half as ball after ball was pummeled into the Swieqi penalty box although the defence held firm. Matthew Mulholland then pulled off an outstanding save from point black range, before Zejtun were reduced to 10 men after Ekezie was viciously hacked down outside the box. Swieqi thereupon pressed home the advantage and Jeremy Gatt Coleiro made it 2-0 with a wonder strike leaving the Zejtun keeper stranded. Thomas Thorman also made his debut for Swieqi, coming on for Konda to sure up the defence in the last few minutes. A great and deserved win for the Orange.
