Swieqi get back to winning ways

06.11.13 Swieqi get back to winning ways

Putting aside the disappointment of the FA Trophy, Swieqi United simply had to bounce back against a physical Attard side. The Orange certainly made it hard for themselves, for it goes without saying that Swieqi were left chasing shadows in the opening half hour - having failed to settle throughout the course of the initial proceedings. In fact, it was Attard who rightfully took the lead. A long ball was headed by Matthew Sapiano and ELTON CASSAR'S delicate lob found its way into the back of the net. Thankfully, Swieqi's reaction was swift. A free kick was awarded, and Glendon Refalo's cross found the head of MATTHEW ASCIAK who flicked it past the hapless Attard keeper on 35 minutes. A lucky break for Swieqi but at least the score was now tied.
The Second half was a completely different story with Swieqi dominating proceedings and going close on several occasions. Fired up after a great half time team talk by coach Debrincat, Swieqi went close through Adam Wingfield whose shot narrowly missed the goal. However, the Orange kept pressing. Abner Dos Santos won a free kick just outside the penalty box and his inswinging cross was met by the head of ADAM WINGFIELD, who making up for his earlier error, put Swieqi ahead.
Thereupon, Swieqi defended boldly with Elton Caruana and Glendon Refalo managing to hold a very tight backline. Changes were made with the vibrant Robert Magro introduced, Simon Borg was brought on to steer proceedings in the middle of the park and Matthew Fenech was asked to bring some panache to the forward area. A late Attard barrage could not find the back of the net and Swieqi held on to another vital 3 points.
