Competition: BOV 3rd Division, Luxol Stadium

Mgarr proved too good an outfit for a Swieqi side which simply failed to turn up on a frustrating Saturday afternoon. Merely 30 seconds into the match, Matthew Sapiano was forced to save after the Swieqi defence failed to notice an Mgarr player left unmarked in the penalty box. The early warning signs were certainly to prove very ominous. Thereupon, Mgarr began to grab the initiative and were awarded when on 18 minutes, RYAN ZAMMIT fired in from close range after the Orange defence had failed to clear the ball from a corner.

Swieqi responded positively with Fabian Debono missing two good chances. The first chance involved some good link up play between Kenneth Ekezie and Fabian but the latter failed to make contact with the ball and Kurtulush’s shot was parried by the keeper. The second chance represented Swieqi’s best opportunity to score. Another good pass found Debono but his low shot just missed the post by a fraction. Mgarr could have added a goal but some poor finishing from their part ensured the score remained 0-1 at the break.

The second half was very much a repeat of the first. Swieqi failed to assert themselves on the game and despite a continuous flow of possession could not break a well marshalled Mgarr backline. Daniel Bianco was replaced by Mark Spiteri – welcomed back after a lengthy lay off on the sides and Matthew Fenech was brought on to replace Tundzhay Kurtulush. Swieqi kept on pressing throughout the final stages with Wingfield and Hampton also providing support. However, it was Mgarr who has the last laugh as JONATHAN MUSCAT raced forward and lobbed the ball past the hapless Sapiano. A bad day at the office for the Orange!
