Marsaxlokk comeback stuns Swieqi

09.10.13 Marsaxlokk comeback stuns Swieqi

Swieqi were left gobsmacked as a 15 minute fightback by Marsaxlokk ensured the Orange left the Mosta Stadium red faced and empty handed in a topsy turvy encounter. No sooner had the game kicked off, Abner Dos Santos was brought down in the penalty box. The referee signalled a penalty but much to the Swieqi bench’s disbelief, the linesman also signalled for an offside. It was a great let-off for Marsaxlokk. Thereupon, the game fizzled out into a midfield battle.

Swieqi had their chances with Dos Santos going close and Robert Magro’s free kick being saved by the keeper. Right before half-time, Noddy Naudi’s brilliant pass found FABIAN DEBONO and the striker made no mistake from close range making the score 1-0 to the Orange.

The Owls more or less kicked off the second half in the same manner as the first. Dos Santos had been replaced by Kurtulush and the Turk’s impact was immediate. Some good work down the left flank led to FABIAN DEBONO once again rounding the keeper and making the score 2-0. At that stage, the Orange felt that the points were in the bag. Nevertheless, being the unpredictable sport that it is, Marsaxlokk were just about to commence a stunning fightback.

With Swieqi tiring, MANUEL CARUANA raced through and chipped goalkeeper Matthew Sapiano to reduce the deficit. Four minutes later (77th minute), MARLON GRECH raced through the back line, skipped past two player and unleashed a vicious shot which left Sapiano stranded. Marsaxlokk’s stunning fightback was then completed when another counter-attack found JEROME PSAILA unmarked and he duly converted on 88 minutes to seal the 3 points for the Southerners.
