Ekezie hat-trick ensures opening-day win

15.09.13 Ekezie hat-trick ensures opening-day win

The Orange had a point to prove when they commenced their league campaign against a spirited and physical Ta’ Xbiex side. Coach Debrincat had made it clear that a similar debacle as had occurred against Qrendi could not be tolerated and Swieqi this time managed to forge ahead after 8 minutes when KENNETH EKEZIE neatly chested down the ball and blasted it into the net. It didn’t take long for Swieqi to double the score. A cross into the Ta’ Xbiex box caused havoc with the whites’ goalkeeper not being able to keep hold onto the ball allowing KENNETH EKEZIE to double the score. Swieqi also went close to adding a third when Dos Santos’ rasping shot hit the post.

A dominant Swieqi then continued where they left off in the second half with some attacking play. However, it was Ta’ Xbiex who scored when Christian Wismayer’s free kick found the head of MATHIAS MICALLEF who made it 1-2. Swieqi’s response was clinical as it was effective. Merely a minute later, KENNETH EKEZIE’S swift turn and low shot made it 3-1 and effectively ended Ta’ Xbiex’s resistance. Swieqi also went close to making it four but some rustiness in front of the goal prevented a greater margin.
