10.10.19 Seniors Women: Swieqi United held to Draw by Gharghur Raiders
Swieqi United came into Tuesday’s match determined to start the league campaign on a positive note.
Unfortunately, the weather proved to be a variable in the match, and this, coupled with a few near misses, proved to be frustrating for the Owls and their efforts in trying to win the match.
The first twenty minutes of the match saw the ladies in Orange dominating possession, with a lot of action taking place in Raiders’ defensive zones. In the 10th minute, Swieqi United found an opportunity and took it - with Ruth Steer Chetham bagging the first goal of the match with a tap in from rebound. It wasn’t long before Raiders upped their game and solidified their defense, intent on making it difficult for their opponents to find a breakthrough. Despite this, the Owls persisted in trying to create opportunities, while also attempting to block off any threats. Nonetheless, Raiders’ determination paid off and saw them score the equalising goal in the 37th minute.
In the second half, the match was played more in the midfield, with the teams trying to build up play through their respective playmakers. Despite incessant pressure applied by the Orange, the Raiders back-line seemed to handle everything Swieqi Untied threw at them. Jade Flask’s slightly miscalculated headed attempt then almost stunned the crowd but bounced off the goalpost. In the meantime, goalkeeper Vesna Vitanova made some excellent saves from a couple of dangerous balls floated into her area.
Despite their overwhelming presence on the pitch, the ladies in Orange will probably be disappointed to not have come away with three points. Nonetheless, they will use this match as an opportunity to build on their efforts and look ahead to the match to come against Hibernians.
