31.01.16 U17s give club first points ever in Section B
Swieqi lined up against Kirkop earlier today in what was to be a tight encounter. Early in the first half Swieqi conceded twice and once again it seemed that we would suffer. To the boys credit they kept on fighting and winning balls all over the pitch. Kirkop shot a few wild balls but as the half crept to a close Swieqi were getting better and kept their ground solidly. Still it remained 2-0 to the southerners.
Coach Vella’s hair rising team talk seemed to do the trick as our Orange warriors stepped out onto the pitch with confidence. Then finally all the hard work started to come together. First Shaw was hauled down in the penalty box by the Kirkop keeper who was left hapless moments later when L.Gatt made it 2-1 from the spot. Swieqi pushed on and a shove in the back on Giles gave L.Gatt yet another chance from the spot. The Kirkop bench were not too happy with the referee’s decision and after some harsh words their coach got sent off. L.Gatt made it 2-2 and the end was in sight. Swieqi did get a 3rd goal but it was unfortunately ruled offside. Swieqi could have had another penalty but this time it was Shaw who was carded for simulation. The last minutes were tough as Swieqi got reduced to ten men when D.Vella got his second yellow of the day.
Today our lads made us so very proud! Courageous, confident, strong, determined and Incredible! Special mention must go to Borg Bonello(Ciccio) as he battled on despite another battle scar from an elbow to the face.
