20.01.16 Futsal: Swieqi beat Msida in pulsating match
Buoyed by their impressive 12-1 victory over Mdina Knights in the last game, Swieqi took on another tough challenge, this team facing seasiders Msida.
Labelled as an important clash due to the fact that both teams are challenging for a top 6 finish, Swieqi demonstrated their fine capabilities late last night at Corradino.
Swieqi were the first team to have a chance to open the score, with Diego and Bobo proving dangerous upfront. Msida began to come into the match and threatened taking the lead however Swieqi goalkeeper Keith Cassar Jackson had another outstanding match in the Swieqi goal!
As the minutes ticked off the clock, Swieqi began to become more dangerous and this certainly upset Msida who soon found themselves having committed 5 fouls with 5 more minutes of playing time left. From the resulting free kick, Gabor blasted home the lead 1-0 with a well taken goal that sailed through the defensive wall and found itself in the back of the net, sending the Swieqi bench and fans into celebration mode.
On the 18th minute Msida committed their 6th foul, resulting in a penalty being awarded to Swieqi which was well taken by Diego to give Swieqi a 2-0 lead.
The last minute certainly kept everyone on the edge of their seats when Msida's Ryan Xuereb scored a wonder goal to keep his team well into the game. Time wasn't up yet and Msida committed their 7th foul of the half, however Bobo saw his penalty shot saved by the Msida goalkeeper Ivan Cassar. Msida surged into attack and came close to equalising, however Keith Jackson superbly saved the ball from hitting the back of the net.
Msida definitely upped their game in the second half and nearly caught Swieqi napping, only to see their shot go just wide. Msida's perseverance paid off when they grabbed the draw 2-2 on the 5th minute. Things could have gotten much worse for Swieqi when Msida were awarded a penalty in the 8th minute. Keith Jackson pulled off a number of quick successive saves to prevent his team from going under!
This made Swieqi believe that they can grab something from this match and they surged into attack, only to see their chance cleared off the line! However in the 9th minute Omar restored Swieqi's lead blasting home to make the score 3-2.
Timmy Gingell had a wonder shot which was tipped over by the goalkeeper, and Msida's Armando Gjepali saw his shot cannon off the crossbar!
Diego further built Swieqi's lead in the 13th minute when he simply taped the ball in to make the scoreline 4-2 for Swieqi.
With 5 minutes left to play, Msida opted for a flying keeper. However their tactics failed to cause Swieqi any significant problems and Swieqi had a number of long range chances to try and score in the empty net. Bobo succeeded in this in the 18th minute when a well struck shot found itself in the back of the net. Bobo added his second with seconds remaining to make the final scoreline 6-2 and send the Swieqi officials and fans into ecstatic celebrations.
Swieqi next face neighbours Luxol on Friday 29th January at 8pm at Corradino Pavillion in a match which is bound to generate a good interest and following.
