Swieqi brush aside Mdina Knights

16.01.16 Swieqi brush aside Mdina Knights

Swieqi United last night sent a firm warning shot to all other teams that they deserve to be there among the top ranked teams on the island.

Swieqi braced themselves for a stern challenge from Mdina, not least due to the opponents being younger then our team and having more running capabilities on paper.

However the Mdina that narrowly lost out to Msida 5-4 were simply helpless in stopping Swieqi from securing an epic victory, the biggest scoreline in futsal this season!

Swieqi coach Kenneth Fiteni, making his debut as Head Coach instructed his players to start off strongly and give their 100%. Boy did the players follow such instructions! From the beginning Bobo and Diego were already causing Mdina problems. On the 3rd minute, Timmy Gingell scored a spectacular goal to give Swieqi the lead, earning a round of applause from all those present at Corradino supporting the team. On the 6th minute, Gabor danced around the Mdina defence, disposing of two defenders before a lovely finish to give Swieqi a 2 goal lead.

Cristian Hurtado was denied by the outstanding Mdina goalkeeper Matthew Gatt, who without his heroic saves the scoreline would have been much worse! However on the 9th minute Cristian also added his name to the score sheet to give his team a 3-0 lead.

Gabor and Bobo scored two further goals on the 10th and 11th minute to put Swieqi 5-0 up. By this time Swieqi were raiding the Mdina goal post but Matthew Gatt was on alert and denied numerous chances for Swieqi.

Swieqi's troops headed for the half time break with a well earned cushion.

The start of the second half saw Swieqi introduce Karl Balzan in goal instead of Keith Cassar Jackson who had a good first half. Timmy Gingell was on fire last night and had another chance to score, only to see his effort go just wide. Chris Wizu added his name to the scoring party when he put Swieqi 6-0 ahead. Mdina had a good chance on the 8th minute to grab a consolation goal, but keeper Balzan was alert and kept out the danger. Swieqi kept on putting pressure on the Mdina goal, with Diego having his shot skimming the crossbar and Omar seeing his shot cleared off the line. Wizu added a second goal to his name when he increased the lead to 7-0 and Gabor added an 8th goal on a quick counter attack.

Play was suspended briefly when Club official Robert Dingli was called onto the pitch for mobbing duties, earning a sarcastic round of applause from the Swieqi fans, until the referee was satisfied that the court was shining perfectly!

Mdina managed to pull a goal back when their No.17 scored a well taken goal on the 17th minute.

Wizu grabbed his hat trick with 2 minutes remaining when he put Swieqi 9-1 ahead. In the last minute Swieqi added a further three goals when Omar and two Bobo goals (earning himself a hat trick) finished off the game 12-1 in Swieqi's favour.

Besides being the biggest victory this season of Swieqi Futsal, it was also the first time in club history that 3 SUFC players grabbed personal hat tricks in the same game!

Swieqi next take on the challenge of Msida on Tuesday 19th January at 9.30pm.
