07.12.15 Costly errors condemn Seniors to damaging defeat.
Swieqi faced up to Mellieha at the Luxol Stadium on Sunday hoping to bag some precious points in their bid to get out of the relegation zone.
In fact, Swieqi started rather brightly and went close early on through Matteo Caribotti and Nicholas Schembri. The Oranges' well organised game plan was paying dividends and on 10 minutes, the same Schembri latched onto a header from Erik Gollcher and volleyed the ball past the Mellieha keeper.
Swieqi were playing some good and attractive football when suddenly, Nicky Schembri was punched by a Mellieha player - only for the offence to go both unnoticed and unpunished (despite Schembri's evident nose-bleed). As a result of such an unfortunate circumstance, Swieqi lost their cool and conceded on 35 minutes. Mellieha then began to impose themselves on the game and were unlucky not to score again but Swieqi keeper Sam Bartolo kept the Orange in the game.
As the second half commenced, a defensive mix-up at the back and some hesitation by captain Jon Briscoe White allowed Mellieha to grab a second goal and thereby put them firmly in the driving seat. Swieqi did try to stage a late rally and went close through both Patrick Briscoe White and Guilherme Calado. In the final moments of the game, Kenneth Ekezie's
thundering header rattled the crossbar and Mellieha thus managed to hold on to grab a crucial 3 points.
