20.11.15 Swieqi succumb to late goal
The Orange faced up to rivals Sirens in a gripping encounter at the Luxol stadium on Friday night. Having been trounced 0-3 by Marsa, Swieqi needed to bounce back and were required to do so against the in-form Northerners.
Proceedings throughout the game were tight and Swieqi could have gone ahead early on when Glendon Refalo's shot was saved at point blank range from the keeper. A couple of minutes later, Kenneth Ekezie also went close when his shot just shaded the post. Sirens replied moments later when keeper Sam Bartolo was forced to pull off a great save and throughout the first half, Sirens hit the inside of the post only for the ball to be cleared off the line by Kenneth Ekezie.
In the second half, Swieqi set out to keep Sirens at bay and threatened through Matteo Caribotti and Glendon Refalo. With the game seeming to be heading towards a score draw, Sirens' Ethan Jay Goodman's cross shot found its way over the hapless Sam Bartolo provoking wild celebrations from the Northerners bench. The goal was scored on the 86' minute. It was way too late for Swieqi to mount any sort of comeback and the Orange's winless run against Sirens continues...
