10.11.15 Swieqi Futsal start off league campaign with a victory
Swieqi and Marsaskala brought the FMA Gatorade Futsal League 2015/2016 underway on Monday night when the two teams met at Corradino Pavillion. Having already met this season in the Knock Out Competition, both teams tried to build up on their opponents weaknesses from the previous game and capitalise on them. Marsaskala had Nikolay Filipov making his debut with his new team and his presence as well as knowledge certainly helped the Greens.
Swieqi began to grow confident in their game but were frustrated to find the Marsaskala custodian in fine form once again denying Swieqi a number of chances to open the score. Towards the end of the first half, Swieqi took a two goal led thanks to two well taken goals by Fredrick Johansson and Diego Gomes de Mello. Filipov pulled a goal back for Marsaskala and with just 40 seconds remaining for the end of the first half Swieqi keeper Karl Balzan pulled off a magnificent save to deny the Greens pulling level.
Swieqi started the second half very strong and soon found themselves building a comfortable 5-1 lead thanks to goals from Laszlo Hajossy, Diego and Cristian David Hurtado Sanchez. However some dubious fouls committed by Swieqi saw the Oranges committing over 5 fouls, which resulted in a direct penalty being awarded to Marsaskala which was cooly converted by Filopov to bring the score 5-2. Swieqi were riding some strong pressure by the Greens and soon found their lead cut down to two goals when Marsaskala added a third. Swieqi coach Laszlo was not happy with how his men were playing and quickly called for a time out and a much need team talk. Dylan Micallef restored some comfort to Swieqi’s lead soon after the time out, only to see Marsaskala yet again pulling another goal back through their number 10! In the last minutes of the match keeper Balzan was again called into action and pulled off a number of good saves and Cristian also saved his team conceding another goal when his challenge prevented the ball going over the line.
In the end Swieqi held on for a deserved victory. Credit also to Marsaskala who gave all those present at Corradino a great game of futsal and never threw in the towel and conceded defeat. On behalf of everyone at SUFC, we wish them the very best in their debut season!
