The Women retain top spot

06.11.15 The Women retain top spot

After beating ex-leaders of the table, Hamrun, Swieqi went on the pitch to maintain their top position in the second division. In the first half, Swieqi were attacking constantly. On the 16th Minute, Moore was given a through-ball, she controlled it in front of the Tarxien goalie, dribbled her and finished it off nicely in the bottom right corner to put Swieqi into the lead.

Tarxien suffered to play the ball around in the first half, however tried to close their defense as much as possible, making it hard at times for Swieqi to get the ball in the back of the net. In the 27th Minute, Naudi, with the ball in her feet, dribbled past two Tarxien players and whilst the goalie tried to catch the ball, Naudi chipped the ball just off Grech’s hands giving Swieqi a 2-0 lead.

In the second half, Swieqi kept up their momentum and just after a minute their attacking play resulted in an own goal by a Tarxien defender. The girls in orange kept up their possession and had many shots on target. At one point, Moore received a ball down the line, dribbled the last defender and tried to finish but unfortunately the cross-bar denied Swieqi the fourth goal. Tarxien tried to react by creating two counter attacks, however Swieqi’s defensive line proved to be compact once again. Towards the ending minutes, Azzopardi deflected a shot on target by a Tarxien player into a corner. The corner resulted in the very first goal conceded by Swieqi but the girls in orange still emerged as deserved winners of the match, retaining their top spot in the second division.
