Seniors fight back to earn crucial point

01.11.15 Seniors fight back to earn crucial point

Swieqi United had to dig deep yesterday to salvage a point against a very good Zabbar St. Patrick's team. In fact, it was the Southerners who started brightly and went close on several occasions. They did manage to get into the lead when a free kick on the edge of the box was smacked hard and low past the hapless Sam Bartolo. Zabbar almost doubled their lead had not keeper Sam Bartolo been in great form.

Coach Billy Mock changed proceedings during half time with the notable change being Nicholas Schembri who replace Simon Sammut. Schembri's work in the middle of the pitch proved vital as he linked up well with Jean Claude. The Blues came out pressing and harassing Zabbar and were duly awarded a goal when Erik Gollcher was left unmarked from a corner and his low shot went into the net. At 1-1, Swieqi were back in the game and deservedly so.

Unfortunately, Kane Micallef was sent off for retaliation and Zabbar St. Patrick's were also reduced to 10 men for a second bookable offence. Daniel Calleja Cremona was then forced off due to fatigue as was the hard working Guilherme Calado. Despite some late scares, Swieqi managed to hold on to a precious point!

Formation: S. Bartolo, G. Refalo, K. Sultana, E. Gollcher, P. Briscoe White, J. C. Borg, S. Sammut (N. Schembri), D. Calleja Cremona (K. Coleiro), G. Calado (B. Menezes), K. Micallef, K. Ekezie
