09.10.15 Futsal Squad leave it late to book QF spot
Swieqi began their futsal commitments with a hard earned win over newcomers Marsaskala in the Knock Out round last night. Marsaskala certainly gave a good name of themselves and have fired an early warning shot to those teams who think that they will be easily beaten.
In fact it was Marsaskala who stunned those present by taking the lead through a deflected goal. Clearly rattled by the goal, Swieqi tried desperately to search for an equaliser before the break. Gabor Balan grabbed the equalizer which led to Swieqi dominating the last five minutes of the first half with Dylan Micallef seeing his shot crash off the cross bar after a good team build up and also Diego Gomes de Mello being unlucky to see his well taken shot saved brilliantly by the Maraskala keeper. Seconds before the end of the first half Maraskala were presented with a golden opportunity to nip into the lead but luckily for Swieqi the chance went just wide.
Swieqi coach Laszlo instructed his men to increase their game tempo in the second half and indeed Swieqi started off the second half as the stronger team having a number of great chances to take the lead were it not for the heroic performance of the Marsaskala keeper.
Marsaskala didn't let such pressure effect them. A quick counter attack saw them taking the lead 2-1 again sending shock waves in the pavilion. Swieqi grabbed the equaliser 7 minutes from time when Daniel Sant smashed the ball into the net. Diego Gomes soon added a third. Swieqi were awarded a penalty which was cooly converted by Daniel Sant to make the score 4-2 in Swieqi's favour. Daniel had the chance to grab a hat trick however the ball didn't seem to want to cross over the line.
Towards the end Swieqi scored a 5th goal thanks to Gabor and Marsaskala added a third seconds from the end of the match.
Swieqi now advance to the Quarter Finals in the Knock Out and will face Mqabba on the 25th February at 9.30pm.
Swieqi begin their league commitments on Wednesday 11th November when they take on Marsaskala at 9.30pm.
