31.03.15 Swieqi grab vital 3 points in glorious sunshine
Beaming from their first historic promotion to Section D, Swieqi's minors were back in action earlier this afternoon in a game played in glorious sunshine at Marsaxlokk Ground v Marsaskala.
Swieqi went out on the attack from the start of the match. However with a strong wind blowing behind them, Swieqi found it hard to control the game and convert the killer shot to score. As the time progressed, Marsaskala began to settle nicely in the game and managed to carry out a couple of counter attacks but none threatened Swieqi custodian Matthew Schembri.
Swieqi struggled in the first half with the wind conditions and both teams headed off into half time at 0-0.
Coach Mario Mifsud gave specific instructions to his players for them to be more aggressive in the second half. His words were reflected in the game plan of Swieqi who kept on knocking on Marsaskala's goal post shot after shot. However some great saves by the Marsaskala goal keeper kept Marsaskla in the game.
In the 70th minute, Swieqi took the lead through a well taken goal. Jonathan Xuereb stick out his toe nails to ensure that the ball did not go out of play down the wing and sliced the ball across to the unmarked Luca Borg. Borg's shot was initially well saved by the goalkeeper, however suber sub Thomas Debono smashed the rebound into an empty net to give Swieqi a deserved 1-0 lead.
Two dismissals for Marsaskala did not help them to level matters and as time ran out Swieqi emerged 1-0 winners to move 5 points clear at the top of the league with 2 games remaining!
Swieqi next face neighbors Gharghur on Monday 6th April at 8.15pm at Mosta Stadium.
